Complimentary Screening

At Silly Goose Speech Therapy, we believe that every child deserves the best support for their speech and language development. That's why we offer a free screener to help identify any potential communication challenges your child may be facing.

What to Expect:

  • Location: Community screening events will be advertised on our social media pages. Additionally, we offer virtual screeners and on-site preschool screeners.

  • Quick Assessment: The screener is easy to complete and typically takes about 10-15 minutes.

  • Targeted Questions: We’ll ask you a series of questions to evaluate your child’s speech clarity, vocabulary, sentence structure, and social communication skills.

  • Interactive Activities: Your child will engage in fun activities that promote the use of a wide range of receptive and expressive language skills.

  • Formal Screeners: Articulation and phonology may be screened utilizing a formalized screening system in order to obtain more detailed information.

  • Personalized Feedback: After completing the screener, you'll receive tailored feedback that helps you understand your child’s strengths, areas for growth, and proposed next steps.

Comprehensive Evaluation

Our comprehensive evaluations are designed to assess various areas of communication skills in children. This includes the following components:

  • Parent Questionnaire: Families will complete a brief questionnaire to provide background information, concerns, and context about the child's communication behaviors at home and in social settings.

  • Observation: A therapist will observe the child in a play or interaction setting. This allows for an assessment of natural communication abilities and social skills in a relaxed environment.

  • Standardized Tests: Age-appropriate standardized assessments will be conducted to measure specific speech and language skills, including articulation, vocabulary, and comprehension.

  • Interactive Activities: Engaging activities, such as games or storytelling, will be used to evaluate the child's expressive language, narrative skills, and ability to follow directions.

  • Feedback Session: A follow-up discussion will be held with the family to review the results of the evaluation, answer questions, and determine the next steps if any concerns are noted.

This holistic approach ensures that we gather a complete picture of the child’s strengths and areas for improvement in communication.

Treatment Session

An average speech and language treatment session typically lasts between 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the specific needs of the client.

  • First: The session usually begins with a warm welcome, creating a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. Therapists might start with a brief check-in to see how the client is feeling and to review any progress since the last session.

  • Next: The therapist reviews specific goals tailored to the client, such as improving articulation, increasing vocabulary, or enhancing social communication skills. The session will include engaging activities that are both fun and therapeutic, allowing clients to practice their speech and language skills in a playful context.

  • Then: Activities may involve interactive games, storytelling, or use of visual aids and toys to encourage participation. Therapists use prompts and positive reinforcement to guide clients, ensuring they feel supported and confident while working on their communication targets. As the session progresses, the therapist may introduce structured exercises that focus on specific skills, such as sound production or sentence formation. Role-playing scenarios and conversational turn-taking can also be part of the session, helping clients apply what they’ve learned in a naturalistic setting.

  • Finally: Towards the end of the session, therapists often recap what was practiced and might assign simple and enjoyable homework that aligns with the client’s goals. This could involve activities like reading aloud, practicing certain sounds at home, or engaging in conversation with family members.

Individualized Education Program (IEP) Coaching

An IEP is a vital tool designed to support children with special needs in their educational journey. However, navigating the IEP process can feel overwhelming for many families. That’s where IEP coaching comes in!

What is IEP Coaching?
IEP coaching provides personalized support to parents and guardians as they advocate for their child's unique educational needs. Coaches work collaboratively with families to demystify the IEP process, helping them understand their rights, responsibilities, and the various components of an IEP.

Benefits of IEP Coaching

  • Knowledge is Power: Coaches offer insights into special education laws, which can help parents effectively communicate with educators and school administrators.

  • Confidence Building: Many parents feel hesitant in these meetings. IEP coaches empower them to express their concerns and suggestions confidently, ensuring their child’s needs are fully represented.

  • Strategic Planning: Coaches assist in developing clear, measurable goals for the IEP, ensuring that the plan aligns with the child's abilities and aspirations.

  • Communication Skills: Effective communication with school staff is essential. Coaches guide parents on how to collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other professionals.

  • Emotional Support: The IEP process can be emotionally charged. Coaches provide a supportive presence, helping families navigate the challenges with compassion and understanding.

How to Get Started
Finding the right IEP coach for your family is crucial. Look for someone who is experienced, understands the intricacies of the IEP process, and shares your values regarding education and support. Initial consultations can help determine compatibility and establish a plan moving forward.

Investing in IEP coaching can make a significant difference in your child’s educational experience, ensuring they receive the support and resources they need to thrive. Remember, you are not alone in this journey!
